  • Private Goodbye

Image Description: Page One: In the first sequence of panels, Theo is standing in a comic book store, holding a comic. The song "Bloodbuzz Ohio" by the Nationals is playing. The lyrics, "I still owe money, to the money, to the money I owe. I never thought about love when I thought about home" are written above his head. Theo thinks to himself, "Oh. It's that song you gave me." The second sequence of panels shows Theo submerged in water up to his shoulders. The water crashes around him with large waves at first, leaving him soaked. t's unclear if his face is wet from the ocean or from crying. Above this reads, "You were like an ocean, brimming with generosity." In the next sequence, Theo is tying his heart with duct tape. At first he gets the tape tightly around his heart, with some frustration, but feels pleased when the tape holds his anger back. However, in the last moment, his heart catches on fire and sets the tape on fire too. Above reads: "But you hurt me, and that anger hasn't receded." Page Two: The first sequence on page two shows nine images, with a small thought written above each image. The images include a manuscript, a paper tray of Popeyes shrimp, a glass bottle of Coca Cola, a record player spinning a vinyl, two movie tickets to the Gene Siskel, a FunkoPop still in the box, a DVD Star Wars movie, two dumplings shaped like pigs, and a pair of gamer headphones. The text above the objects reads: "I don't think I can forgive you. I don't think you would ask me to. I don't think either of us can admit why and where we hurt each other. Still, when I heard that song I was flooded by your kindness. I miss that. I miss you. I hope that part of you I loved lives on... even if I don't know them anymore." The second and final sequence on page two returns to Theo in the comic book shop. He looks away, like something off the page has caught his attention. Then, the comic book shop is empty and Theo is gone. The text above reads, "I wonder if you miss me... too."

  • I have never left the sea

Image Description: Two pages. Each has a body of words aligned to the middle of the page, with outlines done in black marker or sharpie. On both pages, the basic details are identical: on the right and left, two humanoid figures hold their arms up towards the text. They appear vaguely angelic, with wings, multiple eyes on their bodies, and crowns of feathers. The top and bottom borders are of various eyes and teeth, connected by lines. On page one, the top and bottom borders are faded. On page two, the borders are flipped horizontally, and the figures are now faded out with the top and bottom borders being seen in full. Text Transcript: Darling Yaelin, this is Yixiao. "I have never left the sea." Means I am here, means we are here, means up to this present moment we have never left. Means the wave breaks the wave, the water meets the water. Why am I myself? But not you? Why am I not a force of nature? Why are we in this moment? Why haven't we left? Why do we keep returning? Water evaporates, and it becomes clouds and rain drops fall back again, A full circle. A circle is a loop without an end. A circle is the union of a straight line; with two ends, but never ending The first thought A creation. Wisdom pregnanting a thought. Why come back to a thought? Perennial knowledge means wisdom that comes back over and over, Repetitively enough, So thoughts are shared, Thoughts are exchanged, Thoughts that never left, Thoughts that collided, conjoined, and conflicted. Conflicting is also a form of unification. Into one Returning, back to the source Oneness. "The droplets fall on the surface of water, Creating ripples that move outwards." Emanation. It means to project, but why project outwards? It means to travel and move through the differences, it means to have differentiations Cells differentiate, Why do we have to have differentiations in creations? Epistrophe means the overflow of energy. When the energy starts to change, It creates lives, It creates all the possibilities, All the individuals, But they go back to the source reversion to the source. To the sea Bones turn into ashes. Why do we have to go back? And where should we go back to? When should we go back? We will ride the wave when “the lake is arriving." will l be engulfed in it? And never returning again, But always returning. As part of it. Why are we limited, trapped in time? Why can't the present be in the past and the future? Till when can I become you? Till when can we become us? The most scary and beautiful thing is to become something else. Is to imagine the future self, is to let the future haunt the present as a ghost, And when the present is being hunted, The future is with the present, They run in a circle, There is no end, They are no longer trapped in time. So is the past I heard about the story of Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, he can recall and become a buffalo, and a hunter at the same time. He can bring so many moments together and so do I, Because I have my memories, I can imagine you sitting next to me, I think we are already becoming something else, something beyond human. everything becomes parts of everything else. Body to body, Thoughts to thoughts, Feelings to feelings, Actions and actions, Lives with lives, Flesh to flesh. Transmute, Transfigurate Transmigrate.
